Streetwise: Chung On Street

Posted:

One of the oldest streets in Tsuen Wan, Chung On Street connects Castle Peak Road to the north and Yeung Uk Road to the south. Both Sa Sa and Fairwood started their first stores on this street, the name of which means “all in peace”. Until the 1930s, the only two significant streets in the Tsuen Wan area were Chung On Street and Tsuen Wan Market Street. But after World War II, development in the area accelerated. Soon, the Tsuen Wan Rural Committee, together with the Tsuen Wan Trade Association, opened their first office at 9 Chung On Street, connecting the villagers with the British District Office.

Historic house
While in the area, immerse yourself in a bit of history by heading to Tak Wah Street Park, sitting just east of Chung On Street. The park was built to serve Hoi Pa village, built in 1904 by Mr Yau Yuen-cheung (1865-1937), a scholar from the area. It was originally a Hakka mixed-lineage village, and this remaining old house, built with rammed earth, green bricks, green tiles and timber, is a fine example of traditional southern Chinese village architecture.

Forage for food
For those hungry for something a little more physically nourishing, you won’t be disappointed by the food and drink options. Start off by grabbing a fresh juice from Come Buy at Tsuen Wan City (G15, Tsuen Wan City I, 68 Chung On St), and sip it as you walk yourself up to Hak Ka Hut (3B, Tsuen Wan City Landmark Phase I), decorated with old photographs and traditional décor, where you can get yourself a plate of tasty dried shrimps with pumpkin and zucchini. Then top yourself up at Olive Café (G41-44, Tsuen Wan City Landmark Phase I), where you can dig into some smoothies, pizzas, pastas, and, if you feel the need, a few wines.

How to get there
Take Exit B3 from Tsuen Wan MTR. Walk southwest, and cross Castle Peak Road onto Chung On Street.
