It Happened Here: HK's first 7-Eleven opens, April 3, 1981
The trusty 7-Eleven seems like a long-ensconced historic institution in Hong Kong – that’s because it’s been with us for nearly 30 years. On April 3, 1981, our territory’s first 7-Eleven convenience store opened in Causeway Bay, close to Happy Valley.
Hong Kong was the third step in the brand’s Asian expansion, following its first shop in Japan in 1974, and in Taiwan in 1980. After Hong Kong, branches opened in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines, riding a tide of 1980s economic expansion in Asia.
Today, the condom-shilling, emergency-wine purveying, Slurpee-dispensing convenience store has 1,000 outlets in the city, out of 37,000 worldwide. Poor old Circle K has only a third of that number. 7-Eleven in Hong Kong is operated by Dairy Farm International, which also owns Maxim’s, Wellcome and Mannings.
