We know – public transport is just brilliant, but when you’re exploring a new place and the sun is shining, you can’t really beat getting around on foot.

That’s why, when we surveyed our pool of 18,500 city-dwellers for our best cities in the world roundup, we asked them about the walkability of where they live.

It helped us produce a list of the 20 most walkable cities in the world, based on which ones were most frequently described as ‘amazing’ or ‘good’, and Abu Dhabi claimed the top spot.

Not only is the Emirati capital mostly flat, but Downtown Abu Dhabi boasts plenty of pedestrianised areas, and 91 percent of locals, according to Time Out’s survey, rated the city’s walkability positively.

The best example of this is The Corniche, which is an 8km stretch of coast with a beach and pedestrianised promenade, surrounded by views of the Arabian Gulf which stretch all the way to Al Lulu island. Not a bad backdrop for a stroll, eh?

In second place was Boston, and in third place was Brighton, but cities in Spain, Morocco. Australia and Norway all also made the list.
