At Time Out, we’re suckers for travelling by train. However, even we can admit that while trains can be cheaper, less stressful and (obvs) a much more planet-friendly option, like all public transport, they’re still prone to delays.

Some operators are better than others, though. That’s why it’s handy to have a little look at Transport & Environment’s latest report, which has analysed the performance of 27 European rail operators on factors such as ticket prices, onboard amenities and punctuality.

According to the report, only 11 of the 25 train companies with punctuality data achieve a rate above 80 percent – no wonder, then, that 59 percent of Europeans were satisfied with the punctuality of their trains this year.

But it’s not all bad. Trenitalia claims the crown as Europe’s best train operator of 2024, scoring a perfect 10 for special fares and reductions and receiving recognition for its night train offering and compensation policies. Read on for the full top 10 roundup of the best operators.
