Mexico might not be your first thought when it comes to accessible solo travel destinations, but I spent a month travelling across the country and found it full of people joyfully going it alone. From the tiny lagoon-side town of Bacalar to the vast stretches of Mexico City, all corners of the country are comfortably catered to tourism, and getting between and around each place is pretty easy thanks to its extensive coach network. The culture is laid-back so dining solo is a breeze, but it’s also a really good place to find group day trips. In Merida, you can pick up a brilliant walking tour from Parque de Santa Lucia, but also book onto a tour around the Yuchatan Peninsula’s cenotes and the Chichen Itza with Ekinox Tours, and in Oaxaca, we did a brilliant trip up to Monte Alban.
💡 Editor’s tip: Though Mexico’s sprawling, 1,554km Tren Maya network launched last year, I found the country’s coach network simple, cheap and easy to navigate, and there were always plenty of other travellers around – I booked through ADO.
